Dee is currently studying the Diploma in Wedding Planning, Styling and Design with the Academy and recently attended the Event Solutions Idea Factory in Las Vegas where she met up with Academy Director, Kylie Carlson. You can read an account of Dee's journey in Las Vegas here on our blog.
It is very exciting for us to meet up with our students across the world and this was a great opportunity for Dee to enhance her learning experience at the Academy by attending some of the hands on workshops Idea Factory has to offer.

As well as studying with the Academy Dee has already launched her business, Dedicated 2 Detail, which is great to see. She has already had some successes as she was recently nominated as Best New Event Designer in the Wedding Industry Experts Awards for 2013. The results are now out and we are very excited to announce that Dee did extremely well. We are so proud of her and excited to feature her results here:
Well done Dee! This is a fantastic result and we would all like to congratulate you on your success.
Many Academy students like to work at their own pace at a time and place that suits them. However, there are also many students who have a set time period that is much shorter with a goal of launching their business within the next 4-6 months. This type of study requires more structure and guidance from our tutors, which is why we have launched our Fast Track Flexible Study Program.
To enrol on the Fast Track Flexible Study Program all you need to do is click the Fast Track option on the enrolment form, and we will do the rest. To choose your Course and enrol click here. Alternatively if you want to find out more about how Fast Track can work for you speak to our Course Consultant, Zoe McKeown, on 0845 313 6023
Simply put this program allows you to finish your studies sooner allowing you to start your new career quicker. However this will take a concerted effort on your part and the part of your tutor as you will not be allowed to cut corners. As part of this program you will still receive exactly the same course materials as those on the Self-Paced Program, but you will be working to a set time frame. Your Tutor will work with you to achieve your personal study goal and will help you to fast track through the course.
There are 4 intakes for the program each year as follows:
There are limited places available due to the level of involvement and commitment from our tutors to help the students through the course. In order to ensure each student receives the required attention we can only take a limited number of students on each intake, so it is wise to book your place early.

We believe it is important that our tutors are also working planners, stylist or designers, as well as tutoring for the Academy. We have been asked if this affects their commitment to the students and our answer is a categorical NO. It is imperative that tutors are still working in the field within which they are tutoring, that way they can really give their students advice that is current and will work in today’s technology driven world.
All our tutors are given a code of ethics to sign and agree to abide by our 10 day turnaround rule on assignments. From the day a student submits an assignment our tutors have 10 working days to mark the assignment and provide the student with comprehensive feedback and their grade. Most of our tutors will actually turn the assignments around a lot quicker than this, but the guideline has been set in place to allow the student to move on with their next assignment without having to wait for feedback for too long.
We do ask that students wait for their feedback on their last submitted assignment before submitting their next assignment. The reason behind this is to allow the student to apply the feedback received to their next assignment to avoid losing marks for making the same mistakes.
The assignments are a very important part of the course as they allow the student to demonstrate understanding of what they have just learnt. Information on its own is useless without the ability to apply it in a typical event scenario. This is where the tutors are invaluable as they will be able to show students what they have done well and the areas they need to work on.

Formal Accreditation
We are the ONLY training institution in the UK specialising in wedding planning, styling and design offering courses that are accredited by a recognised awarding body. Other institutions are general distance learning colleges and do not focus purely and solely on weddingsAll students studying with the Academy will get a national award equivalent to either a Level 3 or Level 4 of the National Learning Framework depending on the course they enrol in. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. Below you will find our Approved Centre details but if you would like to know more about how our courses fit into the Qualifications and Credit Framework click here.
Centre Number: 8462698
Centre Name: Academy of Wedding and Event Planning
The Academy is nationally and internationally recognised as a professional Wedding and Event training organisation with Director, Kylie Carlson, speaking at many industry events including: The Special Event Show, The Event Solutions Idea Factory and the Australian Event Symposium.
All students who successfully complete a Certificate or Diploma course with the Academy will become ‘Accredited’ by the Academy in their area of study. As an ‘Accredited’ member of the Academy you will be given a Certificate or Diploma and an accreditation logo that you can use to demonstrate your own professionalism to prospective employers and clients.

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a framework that is replacing the existing National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It is a new way of recognising skills and qualifications, by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning). It enables people to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.
The QCF is designed to make sure future qualifications allow a flexible, 'mix and match' approach to meeting the different development needs of the workforce.
Every unit and qualification in the framework will have both a credit value and a level:
There are three sizes of qualification in the QCF:
All students will need a good command of the English language and have a good standard of the written word in order to complete their assignments. The ability to work on your own is also important, as our courses are self-paced and studied independently. Although your tutors are there with you to help you with whatever you need you are essentially working on your own.
Our Certificate in Event Design is the only one of our courses that does need a basic understanding of planning events. This course is set at a slightly higher level and does assume a certain amount of knowledge and refers to industry terminology, room layouts etc.
Normally three GCSE passes at Grade C or above or equivalent will suffice, but we are very flexible and encourage all applications with or without formal qualifications. Our courses are very much industry courses and we don’t discriminate against anyone who is willing to learn.
If you are interested in applying for one of our courses, but aren’t quite ready yet or sure which course is right for you, then register your interest online and one of our Course Consultants will contact you. You can register your interest at any time by clicking here and filling out the online form.
If you know the course you wish to enrol in then you can fill out the application form online and choose your course. You will then have a variety of payment options available to you, which include:
Once you have made your payment choice you can then opt to pay in full, or over 4 or 10 consecutive monthly payments. Upon receipt of cleared funds you will receive an email from the administration team within 48 – 72 hours with your login details and course information.
We are constantly building relationships with new businesses to bring our students more and more opportunities. UKAWEP also has a dedicated career consultant who works on behalf of our students searching out opportunities and posting these in the Career Centre. These are updated on a weekly basis bringing our students up to date information on openings they have found.
As a student you will be able to create a Student Profile through the Social Centre. This allows you to upload a resume and highlight your professional and educational achievements. You can use this profile when applying for a job through the Career Centre, making searching and applying for vacancies very easy.
This is a great tool for potential employers too, as they can apply to become an Employer Partner with the Academy. This allows them to create an Employer Profile within the Social Centre and they can use the Career Centre to post job vacancies, work experience opportunities etc. They are also able to conduct a search for students who might be appropriate by viewing your Student Profile. The environment is a safe one and only approved companies offering real opportunities are allowed to use the portal.
If you are interested in becoming an Employer Partner with UKAWEP please click here.
Wedding and Event Pro is available as an industry online social tool for any wedding or event professional. Members include venues, suppliers, event management companies, event design consultancies and wedding planners. There are many great features to the Social Centre and we have highlighted some of these below:
To visit Wedding and Event Pro and apply for a two week trial membership click here.
When you become a student with the Academy you will receive many benefits that are exclusive to UKAWEP. We have worked hard to partner with many industry professionals from all over the world to give you access to the best and most up to date material available. Our course material is updated throughout the year as the latest trends develop with one complete update done each year. Our ongoing updates include the newest announcements for each season from Pantone – the leading authority on colour for our industry. Emerald, the colour of the year for 2013 was incorporated into the course material within 1 week of the announcement.
So what exactly does your enrolment give you?
Inclusions are subject to change without prior notice
An event can be likened to a theatrical production. You have your star (the client), your cast (the attendees or guests), plus lights, music, entrances, exits, props, costumes and sometimes a bit of stage fright. You are the Event Director and as such you will hold hands, coax vendors, stroke egos, organise, offer advice, negotiate contracts, keep records and keep track of the whole thing. You will provide emotional, mental and physical support to your team in many different ways and be there to steer, protect and plan a day, which to the majority, will be something they have been building up to for many months.
You will work with numerous suppliers providing a variety of services including but not limited to venues, audio visual, rental and marquee, prop hire, registration software, caterers, décor and linen. You will be responsible for budgets, ticketing, event marketing and PR, sponsorship proposals, timelines and run sheets, staffing and much more. To be an event planner you need the patience of a saint, the skin of an alligator and the soul of an artist.
Personality Requirements: It is essential as an event planner to be a team player although being able to delegate whilst maintaining control is also vital. Organisational skills, patience, good communication and the art of listening are helpful too. Add to this attention to detail, efficiency, friendliness and a calm demeanour and you have scratched the surface of what you need to pursue a career as an event planner.
Quick Facts: Event planners tend to work in an office environment but much of their work is conducted on site at hotels and function centres. Working after hours or on the weekend is very common. To be successful you should have an understanding of and hands on experience in many food and beverage operations. Try and gain some experience in waiting, catering and restaurant and banquet supervision.
Education: It really does depend where you want to go with your career, but to enter the world of Corporate or Special Events you will need a hands-on course that teaches the fundamentals of organising a conference, seminar, product launch, fashion show, gala dinner or any other event of this type. Although the Diploma in Events Management is a great course it is much more aimed at those wishing to enter the world of Sporting Events or large ticketed style events. These jobs are hard to get and are not readily available. The more practical courses would be Certificate in Event Planning or Advanced Diploma in Special Event Planning & Design
Understanding the many elements that go into the make-up of a great event is crucial. These can include staging, rigging, draping, lighting, audio visual, special effects, colour schemes & pallets and many others. Most designers have an understanding of CAD software or will work with other forms of online design tools such as Event Designer Space Planner.
The types of events a designer can work on include: weddings, product launches, fashion shows, conferences, exhibitions, gala dinners, corporate functions & festivals. Some designers will also plan, consult and coordinate but more often than not, they will limit their services to design and decor. But above and beyond all else an event designer is using the 5 senses to tell a story that will transport their guests into another world.
Personality Requirements: You need to be creative with a good eye for colour. The ability to think outside the box, conceptualise and look at a venue as a blank canvass is a must, so you can effectively create something out of nothing. Working to deadlines under pressure is helpful as is being organized and having great attention to detail. An inquisitive mind with a right brain tendency is a plus point too.
Quick Facts: Designing an event is part of the Event Planning process, but it is a separate activity and requires different skills and knowledge if it is to be done well. It is an area of Event Management that we specialise in here at UKAWEP and we are the ONLY training establishment in the UK offering a course in this subject. The design and styling of the event are the things many people are first drawn to when they consider a career in our industry. But there is more to design and styling than colours and floral arrangements. By giving consideration to the ‘design of an event’ you create an event that stands out from the crowd as unique.
Education: As the only school offering a qualification in event design there are certainly not any formal requirements to enter the industry. However, most companies will expect you to have a good knowledge and understanding of event planning and be able to combine this skill with event design. For those of you that already have these skills then our Certificate in Event Design will be perfect for you. If you are still learning the basics of event planning then the Advanced Diploma in Special Event Planning and Design is the best option as you will learn both skills together and not feel out of your depth.
A stylist is all about aesthetics, producing the WOW factor and creating a personality for every wedding they are involved with. Each couple are different and have their own personalities and this needs to be reflected within the wedding. A stylist will help with the look and feel of the wedding including the guest experience, the colour scheme, the venue, the flowers, the linen and décor, table design and centrepieces, music and entertainment, invitations, lighting and overall ambience.
Many stylists will create inspiration boards with their client to ensure the entire wedding is cohesive and comes together to correctly reflect the bridal couple’s vision of their day.
Personality Requirements: Styling a wedding is the culmination of the work of many wonderfully creative and talented people who all specialise in different areas. As the stylist you need to have an eye for detail that allows you to subjectively look at all of these areas and see how well they all come together. Creativity is a must along with the ability to open your mind and let it roam free. Brainstorming powers are a necessary evil as is an aptitude for storytelling. A knack for working with different colours and being willing to experiment with them is an art you will need to hone. Resourcefulness, multi-tasking, drive, passion and a dash of craziness are all in the mix as well.

Quick Facts: Wedding styling is the combination of many skills such as window & set dressing, fashion design, merchandising & styling, interior design & décor and colour management. Event design will see you working with many different elements including:
Education: As a relatively new field wedding styling doesn’t have any formal requirements to allow you to enter the industry, however this is not an industry you should enter without some form of qualification. Apart from anything else even those with natural abilities need to be shown the tricks of the trade, the unwritten rules, the do’s and don’ts and given the tools required in order to be a successful stylist. Our Diploma in Wedding Planning, Styling and Design allows you to discover unique and innovative ways to style and transform environments for all types of venues. The course is a fun blend of conceptualising, planning and production with lots of hands-on creativity. Students will look at how and where to find creative inspiration, design presentations ,sourcing materials, budgeting and event execution.
It allows them a greater degree of flexibility and they can fit it in with their lifestyle and weekly routine. The course material is offered in several different formats to provide a stimulating learning environment.
It is structured so that the student is introduced to a series of industry experts throughout the course allowing them to learn from many different viewpoints. Students are exposed to these experts using technology such as webinars, podcasts, visual journals and articles. Throughout each unit there are references to blogs, industry publications and other online resources that we have found invaluable over the years.

Add to this access to our online library of articles and podcasts and regular tutorials offered through our social centre and students have a full arsenal of tools at their disposal as part of their enrolment with UKAWEP.
We also have many industry partners who regularly offer our students access to resources that are not normally available to students.
Wedding planning is all about organization, logistics, attention to detail and the ability to delegate, time manage and supervise. As a wedding planner you save your client, time, stress and money with the ability to seamlessly make everything come together at the right time.
Equally as important is the ability to develop strong relationships with suppliers; whether you work with them once or time and time again.
The services a Wedding Planner provides can range from sourcing and booking suppliers and ‘on-the-day-coordination’ only, to a more comprehensive service that includes working on all elements of pulling a Wedding together.
Personality Requirements: A Wedding draws together numerous creative industries and this is an ideal profession for anyone with a flair for creativity and the ability to communicate. However, a Wedding Planner needs to be more than just creative, they must also be organized, detail orientated, have good problem solving skills and stamina also helps. The ability to keep a cool head in stressful situations is essential. A Wedding Planner needs to have good listening and communication skills and patience is another useful quality. Sales and Marketing skills are also important, particularly for Wedding Planners who intend working in their own business.
Quick Facts: Wedding Planning is a growing profession and expectations are that the industry in the UK will follow America, where Wedding Planning is seen as a profession equal to that of Corporate and Special Event Planning. Evidence of the growth of the industry here is found by looking at the number of venues now hiring ‘Wedding Planners’ who work with couples on their wedding from the venue’s point of view. For anyone looking for job security these roles are an ideal way to get a start in the industry. However, this career definitely lends itself to ‘small business’. Start-up costs are minimal and because you generally travel to your clients you do not need office premises; a good, functioning home office is all you need to get started. It is also a profession you can start on a casual or part-time basis and grow as you become more known within the industry (referrals provide a great source of leads for Wedding Planners so most planners find that the more Weddings the do, the more opportunities they get).
Education: There are no formal education requirements for Wedding Planners. However, to be a professional Wedding Planner you need more than simply the experience of planning your own Wedding, or that of a friend or family member. Even an intimate Wedding can be costly and the couple and their families have a huge investment in the success of the Wedding Day. When a Wedding Planner signs a contract with a couple there is an expectation that, as much as possible, they will ensure that the day runs smoothly. Carrying such as responsibility takes this career beyond that of a hobby and a good Wedding Planner has undertaken studies such as a Certificate in Wedding Planning or an Advanced Diploma in Special Event Planning and Design.
One of the reasons you have probably selected to study via E Learning is that you want to be able to fit study in and around your life, however if you don’t set aside some time each week for study you will always find something else to do rather than working on your course. If you have a set time for study and stick to it you will find it much easier to work through the course at a steady pace and you goals will remain achievable, even if there are the odd days when you need to put something else ahead of your study.
The hardest part of setting your goals will be finding the time to do the work. If you are struggling with finding time, keep a journal for a week and in it record everything you spend time on each day. At the end of the week, review your journal and we can almost guarantee that you will find times in the week that you could allocate to study. Once you have determined your ‘study times’ record them in your diary or online/phone calendar. In other words make an appointment with yourself to do what you have determined you need to do to reach your goals.
Quick tip – include break times in your study routine. Make sure that you allow time for getting up, stretching, having a glass of water and even a snack (nuts are great brain boosters).

Talk About It – Have you told your friends and family that you are studying? Research shows that you are more likely to stick to a course if your friends, family and co-workers know that you are doing it. Once your ‘network’ knows about what you are doing, it will become part of the conversations you have with them; which has the effect of keeping it to the forefront of your mind. If no one knows you are studying it can be too easy to delegate it to the backroom of your mind.
Quick tip – If you are struggling with staying motivated ask a friend or family member to check up on you and read your assignments before you submit them. You could also team up with a fellow student so that you can support each other. You can do this through the Academy forums or speak to your tutor about additional support.
Most of the assignments will take you on the journey of one event all the way through your course. Depending on which course you are taking you will either be working with a fictitious wedding or corporate event client. The wedding or event brief will be based on examples of real events giving you are true to life view of what you can expect to face once you have graduated. You will put together your supplier and vendor database, create a portfolio and develop your planning or design templates.
Once you reach the business units you will be creating your own business plan, pricing structure and marketing plan as part of the assignments. So by the time you have completed your course you will have taken all the preliminary steps required to start your own business.

Assignments are submitted through our virtual campus to your tutor who will grade them and return them via the campus with full feedback and examples to show you areas for improvement. In most cases the tutors will also provide you with a case study of how they themselves would have approached that assignment.
One of the many benefits of the Academy, and what helps to set our courses apart from all the others out there, is the in depth feedback and monitoring you receive from your tutor. They are your mentor and guide whilst you are with the Academy and are available to you both on email and through our Social Centre.
Your course materials are offered in a variety of ways which keep it interesting and engaging. You will have a combination of written text, MP3 audio, and Video all of which is available across multiple devices and browsers. This means you can study using PC, MAC, iPad, Tablets and Smartphones. You will never have to worry about cumbersome folders and text books as everything can be stored on your chosen device.
With our Social Centre you don’t miss out on the interaction with other students on your course either, as brainstorming and socialising happen in our Forums on a regular basis. You can message other students, chat to tutors in the forums and access a wealth of information within our Online Library.
Any type of ‘study’ involves discipline, commitment and time. Whether you are attending lectures or studying by ‘E Learning’ you need to invest in it, in order to get the most out of it and successfully complete the course.
When it comes to ‘distance learning’ though, you need to be even more disciplined than with traditional face-face learning; with no lectures to attend and perhaps no ‘deadlines’ either, it can be easy for the days between study to easily slip from days, to weeks, to months.

Set Goals – when it comes to ‘Goal Setting’ be realistic and make them as specific as possible. Your over-riding goal is to complete the course and then perhaps, start a business or secure a job, but you then need to break this vision down into bite-size goals that will help you to get there. Once you have your ‘mini-goals’, stick to them. Make your study a priority in the same way you do the other things in your life.
A good way to go about setting your goals for study is to look through the material you have to work through. UKAWEP courses are divided into units, so determine the timeframe you want to complete a unit in – based on your goal for how long you want to take to complete the course. If it is one week set a day or night in the week to work on it and stick to it. Each unit is accompanied by an assignment, so again, set a time to conduct your research for the assignment and then a time to complete the assignment itself.
A note about goal setting; your motivation for doing any
type of study should be to learn, not just to get that piece of paper that says you do it. Pace yourself and be realistic about what you can achieve in what amount of time…you don’t want to be racing through the materials. If you find yourself doing this, revise your goals.

How are your courses offered?
All our courses are offered through our interactive E Learning Virtual Campus. This allows us to use tools such as online chat, podcasts, video tutorials to give the illusion of being in a classroom, but all from the comfort of your armchair. In a world where everyone is time poor this flexible method of delivery allows you to study in your own time at your own pace.
Do we have tutors and how do we contact them?
Yes each student has a tutor which is allocated to them upon enrolment. This tutor will work with you throughout your course and be there to help you every step of the way by keeping you motivated, answering your queries and giving you an insight into the world of weddings and events from a professional point of view. They can be contacted through our office number, through the virtual campus or via email.
Are the tutors from within the industry?
Yes. All our tutors have had a minimum of 3 years experience within the wedding and event industry and although the academy itself is dedicated to training and delivering educational courses many of the tutors still run their own wedding planning business so can give you a very real picture of how things work in this industry.
Is the course accredited?
Please see our Accreditation Page for more details
How long does one of your courses take?
Our courses are self-paced. This means that you can study them with the time you have available. We find that this approach enables people with busy schedules to still commit to study. Generally we find that someone who is working full-time and studying our Certificate course part-time will complete it within 6-9 months. If you choose to study the Diploma course part-time it should take between 9-12 months and the Advanced Diploma 12-18 months. However these are just guidelines. We encourage students to complete our courses within two years and we are here to support you to do that.
