Understanding the many elements that go into the make-up of a great event is crucial. These can include staging, rigging, draping, lighting, audio visual, special effects, colour schemes & pallets and many others. Most designers have an understanding of CAD software or will work with other forms of online design tools such as Event Designer Space Planner.
The types of events a designer can work on include: weddings, product launches, fashion shows, conferences, exhibitions, gala dinners, corporate functions & festivals. Some designers will also plan, consult and coordinate but more often than not, they will limit their services to design and decor. But above and beyond all else an event designer is using the 5 senses to tell a story that will transport their guests into another world.
Personality Requirements: You need to be creative with a good eye for colour. The ability to think outside the box, conceptualise and look at a venue as a blank canvass is a must, so you can effectively create something out of nothing. Working to deadlines under pressure is helpful as is being organized and having great attention to detail. An inquisitive mind with a right brain tendency is a plus point too.
Quick Facts: Designing an event is part of the Event Planning process, but it is a separate activity and requires different skills and knowledge if it is to be done well. It is an area of Event Management that we specialise in here at UKAWEP and we are the ONLY training establishment in the UK offering a course in this subject. The design and styling of the event are the things many people are first drawn to when they consider a career in our industry. But there is more to design and styling than colours and floral arrangements. By giving consideration to the ‘design of an event’ you create an event that stands out from the crowd as unique.
Education: As the only school offering a qualification in event design there are certainly not any formal requirements to enter the industry. However, most companies will expect you to have a good knowledge and understanding of event planning and be able to combine this skill with event design. For those of you that already have these skills then our Certificate in Event Design will be perfect for you. If you are still learning the basics of event planning then the Advanced Diploma in Special Event Planning and Design is the best option as you will learn both skills together and not feel out of your depth.

Many Academy students like to work at their own pace at a time and place that suits them. However, there are also many students who have a set time period that is much shorter with a goal of launching their business within the next 4-6 months. This type of study requires more structure and guidance from our tutors, which is why we have launched our Fast Track Flexible Study Program.
To enrol on the Fast Track Flexible Study Program all you need to do is click the Fast Track option on the enrolment form, and we will do the rest. To choose your Course and enrol click here.
